Modasul | You Should Check This When You Go To Palawan! | Located in the Philippines, on the alluring island of Palawan, is Puerto Princesa, a city renowned for its unmatched natural beauty and cultural diversity. With the world’s longest navigable underground river and a stunning limestone karst terrain, it is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
In addition to its natural attractions, Puerto Princesa provides exciting island hopping experiences, lively cultural landmarks, and an ecotourism philosophy that prioritizes sustainability and preservation. In the heart of Palawan’s breathtaking scenery, Puerto Princesa beckons visitors to immerse themselves in an amazing tapestry of experiences through its gracious hospitality, mouthwatering cuisine, and breathtaking views.
The Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, which is situated in the province’s southern region, was one of the highlighted locations for the most recent Philippine Experience Program (PEP), which took place in Puerto Princesa, Palawan last April 10, 2024. PEP delegates were treated to a performance of singing and dancing by persons deprived of liberty (PDLs). Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm was established in 1904 by the Americans as a means of providing food to other PDLs across the nation during a period when the province was still primarily relied on agriculture for its livelihood.
The country’s primary insular penitentiary, New Bilibid Prison, sends PDLs to the penal farm, which also shelters them. The goal of both initiatives is to reduce prison congestion and regionalize PDL incarceration. “Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) has been part of the tourism train visited by locals and foreign tourists of Puerto Princesa. It was declared as one of the city’s Cultural and Natural Treasures of which we’ve welcomed thousands of guests from different parts of the world, as this place catches both the heart and mind of the visitors through its rich history, scenic views, hundred-old structures, and its unique way of corrections service that upholds the goal of reforming the PDL under our care positively,” Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm Superintendent/Bureau of Corrections Chief Inspector Gary A. Garcia Said. Delegates from PEP also had the opportunity to purchase handicrafts from the PDLs.
“Having you all here today opens up a lot of opportunities for Iwahig’s tourist sector to succeed because you can share stories about what Iwahig is really all about while you take advantage of what we have to offer. “I am confident that this cooperative effort towards this noteworthy project, which seeks to enhance and expand the tourism experience, will enable a varied approach to comprehending and observing the treasure of various cultures and customs of Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF),” the BuCor representative stated.
